Hereee Piggy Piggy..
American Horror Story Episode 6 Review:

Another great episode!  This week the blog is a little late because I was trying to deal with the news of Community's midseason shelving.  My first instinct was to go batshit and go "OCCUPY 30ROCK" in protest.. camping out and not leaving until something was done… then I realized it would just be me and my boyfriend with signs/ looking homeless like every other crazy in NYC.. so I scratched that idea.   Trying to wrap my head around the fact that WHITNEY with her canned laugh track is still on the air, but comedic genius is being "shelved".  Sorry Angelle-- i know you have a soft spot for Whit.

Anyway-- on to episode 6.

The opening scene of this week's episode was one of the most chilling to date on the show-- possibly any show in a while.  The generation who is mainly watching this show, I think, was really affected by the whole school shooting trend (that feels horrible to even say) that happened in the 90's.. and unfortunately still happens today.  This fact made the opening even more moving.   I loved that Tate was whistling the "Tate Theme" as he walked around the library-- that is a neat through-line.  **FIRST PROBLEM** In the "Halloween Part 2" episode we were told that when Tate killed Stephanie (played by Alessandra Torresani of "Caprica" fame) he asked her if she believed in God.  In this episode, Tate didn't utter a word the entire time.  This is just a little detail that would have been so easy to include, but really infuriated me that they missed.

Point of interest: What are those scratches on Tate's face?  They sort of look like the scratches that crack whore received from INFANTATA.  Could Tate have been attacked and then driven by the house to commit this horrible crime?  That is my theory (and for the record Constance's too)

We see how Violet slowly unravels as she figures out that Tate is indeed dead.  Thanks to some research on the IMDB discussion boards, I found this great still of Violet's web search.

Could this be true or just more inconstancy in the show?  Let's hope it isn't another fluke.  Who could have been working with Tate?  There has been some speculation that Rubber Man could be Tate's twin and therefore maybe an accomplice.  I don't really see any hint ANYWHERE that that could be true.. so I'm withholding any theories until I have a little more info. (1 WEEK AND COUNTING TO THE RUBBER MAN EPISODE!!)

Point of Interest: Constance seems to be the only person who has lived in the house who has made it out alive.  Why is she so special?  It seems that she was once skeptical of the supernatural, but has since been made a believer by the house. She tells Violet this..  I think Violet will soon be a believer too.  In one of the final scenes in the episode, after Tate has been shot, we see Constance slide down the wall and look around at the house almost as if to ask "why?".  Why has the house hurt her so much (causing her husband to cheat, causing her son to commit murder) but also protected her.

Next we meet Billie, Constance's Medium, whom she found on Craigslist (hilarious).  Through Billie, we learn that Tate doesn't know he is dead.  Constance originally wanted Ben to help Tate "see the truth" so he could cross over, but now it seems Violet will have to do.  Maybe this is because Constance is realizing what an idiot Ben is.

Point of Interest:  In order to convince Violet she is real, Billie tells Violet what her grandmother said to her on her death bed "They don't understand you, they'll never understand you".  Is the reason Tate reached out to Violet because she is a medium?  What is the significance of this statement?
Later in the episode, we see how close Billie and Constance are.  It seems that Constance has been very lucky to find Billie in her life.
In our JESSICA LANGE DESERVES AN EMMY Example of the week: The scene where Constance speaks to Addy through Billie.  This scene was so touching and beautiful.  I'm so glad we got closure on the Addy situation-- that she didn't make it to the lawn in time. I find it interesting that Addy is happy with this, but she admits to Constance that she is afraid of Tate "now that she knows the truth" ( what truth is this? that he killed his classmates? Addy must have always know that Tate was dead).  The fact that Addy is afraid of Tate seems to break Constance's heart.  Wherever Addy is-- she is now happy, at peace and finally a pretty girl.

VIVIEN:  There is so much to talk about in regards to Vivien in this episode.  First off-- I think it has been made very clear that she will be VERY lucky if this baby doesn't come out with hooves, horns and a little pitch fork.  The dream scene where she is stroking her belly and we see the claw like hand (just like infantata), the nurse spiting bible verses at Vivien-- she is IN trouble.  The "it" inside of her is unhappy when she leaves the house (she gets terrible morning sickness whenever she leaves) obviously it and the house are connected in someway.
Constance and the baby:  Constance AGAIN in this episode remarks about how much "we need this baby".  But why?  Constance also tries to "help" viv by bringing by Offal & Brain for her to eat.  She says that it is good for the baby, has lots of nutrients.  I'm not really sure why we had to watch Vivien almost sexually eat all of this.. was it for the gross factor?  Does the "it" inside her need to be nourished with organs and only Constance and Moira know what is REALLY going on?  Vivien is disgusted with herself when she finishes the brain (as she should be).  After doing some research about eating Offal-- I found that while it is a great source of Iron, it shouldn't be consumed during pregnancy because of the high levels of Vitamin A, which can harm the baby-- causing birth defects (marchofdimes.com).  So is Constance really invested in this baby or is she trying to kill it because she knows what it really is?  There has also been talk that the organs were Addy's.  I just can't believe this to be true… it's too gross and Constance wouldn't do that to Addy… right?
Vivien and the Security Guard:  Ok- what is happening here?  Why are him and Vivien either going to have some really racy sex scene or it's going to be revealed that he is a ghost too (we have only scene him off premises on Halloween!)  I love how both Vivien and Ben freak out when Mr. Security tells them that Hayden never made it to the Police Station… which leads us to the point that…

Ben: is an idiot. plain and simple.  It has been more than spelled out for him that Hayden is dead and he misses it every time.  Is it because he is such a man of science? or just an idiot? i think that latter.
I just loved the scene where Ben took Derek (played by the very versatile Eric Stonestreet) to the upstairs bathroom.  The audience was CRINGING because he is convincing Derek that it is safe when we ALL know it is far from safe.  We know something bad is going to happen, but we can't stop it.  All we can do is scream at the television.. like i did.  It's one of my favorite parts of the horror genre.  Lights go off-- the door closed and we couldn't wait to see who would scare the crap out of him.. tate, the doctor, Rubber Man?? Nope its Gladys.
RIP Derek-- my heart broke for him when he finally faced up to his fears.

Also this episode really hit the point home that all of Ben's patients are doomed.   Every week the advice Ben gives to his patients is advice that he could benefit him more than them.

Violet:  I just want to touch a little more on the Violet and Tate relationship.  I find it really touching that she felt as though she needed to find a reason why he did it.  When Violet meets the librarian that survived the shooting she says "Good people don't just have a bad day and start shooting people".  His reply, "Maybe he wasn't a good person".  I just don't believe this.  I really think the house had such a hold on him.  I think the house is starting to get a hold of Violet as well.  She tells Ben that she thinks the "darkness of the house" has her.  He, again, is too stupid to get what she is referring to.  I'm really worried for Violet (even though I hate her and her hipsterness).  After finding out that Tate is dead earlier in the episode, Violet cuts herself and looks up in the mirror and there is Tate asking her "are you scared yet?".  Later she has another Tate encounter.  Him appearing and reappearing all over the house.. leading her to the basement.  She follows him, yelling that she is tired of playing hide and go seek and then she is confronted by the twins, and then Gladys, the murder freaks (proof they were buried on the house property!) and then doctor Montgomery.  Violet goes up to her room and Tate has music playing and left her a note "I love you".  This is the last straw for Violet.  She over doses on sleeping pills she got from Crack Whore.  Is it really Violet or the house that is driving her to do it?  Tate saves her (clearly being the sap I am.. i was sobbing the during this whole part!).  Tate IS Violet's guardian -- he has been able to save her from potentially dangerous situations more than once.  Ironically though, if she had died they could have actually been together.  At the end of the episode, we see that Violet has decided she doesn't mind sort of dating a dead dude.  I think that Tate is beginning to be tired of this life in-between worlds.  Hopefully Violet can help him move on, soon.

Finally--
Open letter to those crazies who are professing their love for Evan Peters/Tate everywhere on the internet--
a) Tate killed 15 people at his school if you think that is sexy you have issues.. for real.
b) I've dated crazy unstable people like sort of likeTate… no thank you… again if you think that is sexy.. you need to see a physiologist.  One who is better than Ben!
c) We share birthdays so I feel as though I need to protect him… even though we are the same age. haha
lay off. NO he won't marry you and NO you won't meet him by professing your love for him on IMDB… in fact you are probably now on some sort of "crazy girl" list his agent/managers have and you'll NEVER get to even see him in public without security presence..
so way to ruin that one.

Happy Watching Friends!

  1. Pouring an ounce to the curb for Community.

Wow... props on your research! Impressed with you looking up at how bad offal is for a baby. That never would have crossed my mind. Constance has to be crazy/bi-polar or something. For many reasons, 1) how she treats her children, 2) her passive-aggressive nature in how she treats Vivian and Violet (remember she originally wanted Violet to eat one of the poison muffins that the one crazy home invader girl grabbed).

I agree with you 100% about the cold open with Tate. It gave me goosebumps and made me a little teary eyed. This hits very close to home for our generation and even though Columbine happened in '99, the fear still ripples today. Isn't it a bit disturbing that Violet is okay with spooning/dating a mass murderer? Even more so that there are obsessed fans out there in love with Tate. That's just... creepy. Ted Bundy, on death row, got love letters and marriage proposals all the time from women that fell in love with him. I'll never understand that as long as I live.. falling in love with a real/fictitious psychopath that would kill you in a minute.

Anwho, I digress. I don't recall Constance's theory about infantata biting Tate or him being driven to commit the crime. You'll have to refresh my memory, Jesse. Great pickup on noticing the inconsistency about Tate asking the girl if she believed in God. I'd totally ask Ryan Murphy that if he were on Twitter.

Tate saving Violet from suicide was a good moment. Crazy good writing/acting to make Tate somehow slightly sympathetic despite the fact that he's a mass murderer. In the hands of lesser acting/writing, this would be booed and hissed by the audience as stupid/illogical. Nicely done, Ryan Murphy and Evan Peters. To answer your question about Addy being afraid of Tate, this is my thoughts. Addy, it seemed, never had a mean bone in her body. She liked playing in the house next door with her ghost friends and was never afraid there. She tried to warn Constance (who was too busy worrying about getting laid) about the home invaders in Episode 2. She just wanted to be a pretty girl for once on Halloween. So her, with her sunny disposition despite having a dragon as a mother, being afraid of Tate after figuring out he's a psycho isn't surprising. I have a feeling we haven't seen/heard the last of Addy. She'll come into play at some point; perhaps saving the life of one of the Harmons. This would probably be Violet since she was kind to Addy by putting make up on her one night.

I'm glad this show isn't pulling a "LOST" by overloading us with questions and waiting 3 seasons to answer them. So here are some of the "rules" apparently... (correct me if I'm wrong, Jesse)

    1) Only ghosts that haunt the house are the ones
that are buried on the property.

    2) The only way a ghost can move on is if their bones are removed from the property (Moira's motive for helping a new potential house buyer).

    3) I'm not clear on this, but is there another rule that ghosts can move on to the other side if they get closure from the past? Like how the dead high school kids wanted Tate to admit what he did on Halloween.

I'm sure there are more, but those are the only ones I can recall off the top of my head. This was your most detailed blog yet. Great job!!

  2. I think that Constance is just a incredibly insecure woman ( i mean can you blame her. it seems everyone in her entire life has died, left her.. or cheated on her!). I actually think she might be one of the sanest people there. As my boyfriend and I were discussing last night-- she is the glue that holds the show as well as the extremely dysfunctional neighborhood together. Constance has all the answers.
I love your rule list! i might have to keep that going! haha

I'l post some more insight on my next blog-- which is going to be a countdown to the RubberMan episode

  3. I have to respectfully disagree about Constance being one of the sanest people there if anything for the fact that she locked Beau in the attic and put Addy in a closet full of mirrors as punishment. Oh, and the fact that she tried to poison Violet. Put it this way... if you are right and she is one of the sanest - - the Harmons are effed! LOL

Constance's sole motivation is the keep that house standing as it contains the ghosts of her children and it holds her past. She will stop at nothing to preserve that. So yes, I see your point about her being the glue of sorts or "caretaker".

Feel free to keep the rules list going!! haha. I'd like to amend Rule #1. 1) Only ghosts that haunt the house are the ones whose bones are buried on the property OR if they were murdered there. (Moira's bones are def buried there. It's not clear whether the nursing students from Ep 2 were buried there or not. Same for the dr, his wife, dead twins, etc.) I want to know why Addy's body had to be on the grass before it was "too late" as Constance dragged her. Just having a blond moment because it briefly made me think she was dead or if that notion was just speaking to the house's supernatural power (much like the power of The Island on LOST). Thoughts?

The Rubber Man mystery is killing me! Can't wait for that reveal. Thanks for keeping me posted on your blog. Glad to have an intelligent discussion about this addicting show!
